SCHIECENTRALE

04-06.2

Build in 1908 Schiecentrale, as the first electricity factory in Rotterdam, will somehow remain the part of city’s culture. Industrial construction of the whole building has been useful until the machines moved out from the site and now remains in the form of a huge, empty volume. Industrial buildings made strictly for heavy machinery have one repeating scheme – the solid platforms, adjusted according to the needs of factory work.

ATMOSPHERIC GRADIENT

︎︎︎
The ground level, made of concrete floor, masonry walls, and rusty metal pillars, reflects the raw character of the space. Standing tables and an exposed dance floor suggest the use of this level. Unconstrained by furniture or tight passages, one can freely migrate through the crowd from bar to tables, to the dancefloor.

︎︎︎

The first, second, and third levels are more in the bar style, with rows of high stools and bar tables. A more packed atmosphere makes it more comfortable to sit, talk and have a drink than the overwhelming space below.

︎︎︎

Higher platforms have also additional flooring layer of wood, that in connection with sunlight coming from high windows and leather gives more warmth than concrete and artificial light.

The color scheme reflects the atmosphere on each level. Color range from cold to
warm tones correspond with the relaxation and calmness of the spaces.

Consecutively from white spotlights of temperature 7000K, through blue, turquoise, bright yellow to warmer yellow, oranges finally arriving in ambiance red of 2000K.

The higher one gets, the smaller capacity of the platforms – lower levels consist of tens of seats while the highest one is confined to one/two small groups.

Seating solutions
vary between different spaces – starting with standing tables, through high stools, chairs, and armchairs, arriving at comfortable sofas.

HISTORICAL CHARACTER

New Schiecentrale would keep its’ Turbinehall character, but with new solutions fitted to the guests’ needs.

Forming the maze as in the playground, platforms connected to each other by steep, steel stairs would lead through all kinds of atmospheres.
