BODY OF VOID
02.2022
In collaboration with Adriana Ferreira
The urban environment has been tightly filled, with buildings of certain purposes, leaving out pieces of land. All of this negative volume in between the buildings of Rotterdam, the leftovers that don’t fit into any purpose that the municipality or investors aim at, is still a valuable space. Realizing the presence of what we can’t see that easily, what we cannot experience as a physical object, but is still there. Testing boundaries of public/private space.
By highlighting its characteristics, we made a statement about realizing the presence of what we can’t see that easily, what we cannot experience as a physical object, but is still there.
By observation of dimensions in the first approach, we have captured the negative space under the stairs leading to Erasmus bridge. An unusually complex form of the positive volume reflected in the model of the negative, enhancing the size and hidden features of the design.

Translated volume attracted the eyes of by-passers, inviting them to notice the nuance of this (un)ordinary space, so easy to miss. By use of semi-transparent material for cladding, from afar structure looked as solid, slowly uncovering the contours, and by entering inside, surrounded by red haze, the landscape was visible through a filter.
